NEW YORK, March 23 – A tragic runway collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night, has left two pilots dead and dozens of others injured, raising serious questions about runway safety and communication protocols. Authorities confirmed that an Air Canada Express aircraft struck a fire-rescue vehicle while landing, turning what should have been a routine arrival into a devastating.

The aircraft, arriving from Montreal, was carrying 72 passengers and 4 crew members when the collision occurred. Officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey later confirmed that both pilots, Captain Antoine Forest and First Officer Mackenzie Gunther, lost their lives in the impact. The crash also left more than 40 individuals injured, some seriously.

Confusion on Runway Leads to Deadly Collision

Preliminary findings suggest that a breakdown in air traffic control communication may have played a critical role in the accident. Audio recordings from air traffic control reveal that the fire-rescue vehicle had initially been cleared to cross the runway. Moments later, controllers urgently instructed the vehicle to stop, but by then, it appears it was too late.

According to officials familiar with the investigation, the aircraft was traveling at approximately 100 miles per hour as it touched down and began decelerating. The timing of the crossing clearance and the subsequent stop command created a dangerous overlap between the landing plane and the emergency vehicle.

Recordings captured the tense exchange. The emergency crew requested permission to cross Runway 4, which was granted. Seconds later, air traffic control issued repeated urgent commands to halt movement. Shortly after, the collision occurred. A controller later acknowledged the situation during a separate exchange, indicating that they had been handling another emergency at the time.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the incident happened while crews were also responding to a separate issue involving a United Airlines flight that had aborted takeoff due to a technical warning and reported cabin concerns. This overlapping situation may have contributed to the confusion.

Aviation experts have described the sequence of events as highly unusual. Captain Laura Einsetler, an experienced pilot with over three decades in aviation, said in a televised interview that having ground emergency vehicles on an active runway during a landing is extremely rare and deeply concerning.

Casualties, Injuries, and Ongoing Investigation

Emergency responders rushed to the scene within minutes, working through debris scattered across the runway. The aircraft, a CRJ 900 operated by Jazz Aviation, sustained severe structural damage. Images from the site showed the front section of the plane heavily destroyed, with the nose area torn apart and the tail remaining on the ground.

The Port Authority reported that 41 individuals were transported to hospitals, including passengers and two members of the airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting team. By Monday morning, Executive Director Kathryn Garcia stated that many had been treated and released, though several remained hospitalized with serious injuries.

Law enforcement sources indicated that most injuries included fractures and bruising, but at least one individual suffered a brain bleed. In a particularly dramatic account, a flight attendant who had been secured in her seat was thrown through a gap in the damaged aircraft structure. She was later found still strapped in and transported to a hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries.

Authorities have emphasized that there is no indication of foul play or terrorism. A source close to the investigation told media outlets that the collision appears to be accidental. Meanwhile, both the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder, commonly known as black boxes, have been recovered and will be analyzed by investigators.

The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed that a team has been deployed to examine the crash site. Chair Jennifer Homendy stated during a press briefing that investigators are carefully collecting evidence, noting the large amount of debris that must be reviewed. She explained that the process could take several days before key materials are transported for further analysis.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also addressed the incident, describing it as deeply troubling and expressing condolences to the victims’ families. He emphasized that ensuring travel safety remains a top priority and noted that multiple agencies, including the FAA and Transport Canada, are working together on the investigation.

Operations at LaGuardia Airport were significantly disrupted following the crash. The airport was temporarily shut down, and a ground stop remained in effect until Monday afternoon. While one runway has since reopened, the specific runway involved in the collision is expected to remain closed until Friday morning. Travelers have been advised to check with airlines for updates due to ongoing delays and cancellations.

Former NTSB Chair Robert Sumwalt explained in an interview that investigators will analyze a wide range of data, including air traffic control communications, radar information, and witness statements. He estimated that the full investigation could take between 12 and 18 months to complete.
