December 23 – The arrest of a California mother in connection with the death of her nine-year-old daughter has shocked communities across multiple states, as investigators outlined what authorities describe as a deliberate and carefully planned crime that unfolded over several weeks.
Ashlee Buzzard, 40, was taken into custody on Tuesday and booked into the Santa Barbara County Northern Branch Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. She is being held without bail following the discovery of her daughter Melodee Buzzard’s remains in a remote area of Utah earlier this month. Law enforcement officials say the evidence gathered during the investigation points directly to the child’s mother as the person responsible for her death.
According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, Melodee’s decomposed body was discovered on December 6 in Wayne County, Utah, by a man and a woman who had pulled over along State Route 24 to take photographs. The remains were found off the side of the road and showed clear signs of gunshot wounds to the head. Authorities were immediately notified, and Wayne County officials began coordinating with investigators in California once it became apparent the case could involve a missing child reported months earlier.
Sheriff-Coroner Bill Brown of Santa Barbara County later confirmed during a press briefing that forensic testing and DNA analysis were conducted to identify the remains. On December 22, investigators received confirmation that the DNA was a familial match to Ashlee Buzzard, establishing that the remains belonged to her missing daughter. Further analysis by the FBI Crime Lab reinforced that conclusion, officials said.
Melodee Buzzard was first reported missing on October 14 after school administrators raised concerns over her prolonged absence. According to authorities, the child had not been seen at school since August, prompting officials to contact law enforcement. Detectives attempted to speak with Ashlee Buzzard, but investigators later said she was unable or unwilling to explain where her daughter was or confirm her well-being.
The investigation quickly intensified. Detectives searched the Buzzard home the day after the missing child report was filed, looking for any sign of Melodee or evidence that could help determine her whereabouts. During the investigation, law enforcement uncovered travel records, surveillance footage, and witness statements indicating that Ashlee and her daughter had left California together earlier in October.
Sheriff Brown stated that evidence showed the mother and child departed California on October 7 in a rented white 2024 Chevrolet Malibu. Their journey took them through several states, including Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and as far east as Nebraska, with a return route that included Kansas. Surveillance footage captured on October 9 near the Colorado-Utah border showed Ashlee and Melodee together, marking the last confirmed sighting of the nine-year-old alive.
Investigators believe Melodee was killed shortly after that sighting. Sheriff Brown said authorities recovered substantial evidence suggesting the crime occurred soon after the two were seen on camera. He added that the amount and nature of the evidence left little doubt about who committed the act.
One of the more disturbing elements of the case involves what investigators described as intentional efforts to conceal the child’s identity during travel. Detectives obtained video from the rental car office in Lompoc, California, which showed Melodee wearing a hooded sweatshirt and a wig that was darker and straighter than her natural hair. The footage also showed Ashlee wearing a long, curly wig. Authorities believe both mother and daughter altered their appearance to avoid recognition while moving between states.

Investigators later determined that Ashlee likely changed wigs multiple times throughout the trip, including switching to a darker wig similar to the one worn by Melodee. Law enforcement officials stated that this behavior appeared calculated and deliberate, suggesting an attempt to evade detection.
Ballistics evidence also played a key role in the arrest. According to Sheriff Brown, bullet cartridges found near Melodee’s body in Utah were linked to a spent cartridge case recovered from Ashlee Buzzard’s home in California. While the firearm used in the killing has not been located, officials said the ballistic match significantly strengthened the case against the mother.
Ashlee Buzzard’s interactions with investigators were described as uncooperative from the outset. Authorities said she repeatedly refused to provide information about her daughter’s location or welfare. Even after her arrest, officials said she continued to withhold cooperation and that there is no indication anyone else was involved in the crime.
In early November, Ashlee Buzzard was arrested on an unrelated charge of false imprisonment after allegedly holding a man against his will. The man reportedly told investigators he had been assisting in the search for Melodee. Although a judge later dismissed the felony charge, authorities noted the incident raised additional concerns during the ongoing investigation.
Speaking about the case, Sheriff Brown described it as one of the most heartbreaking investigations his department has handled. He emphasized the gravity of the allegations, stating that the crime reflected calculated, cold-blooded planning and a level of ruthlessness that was difficult to comprehend. He also noted that while cases involving a parent killing their child are rare, the evidence in this investigation clearly points to a deliberate act.
Melodee’s grandmother, Lilly Denes, shared memories of the child in an interview with the Los Angeles Times. She described her granddaughter as affectionate, cheerful, and well-behaved, adding that Melodee’s father had died when the girl was just six months old. Denes recalled receiving a phone call from a detective on Tuesday, who told her that authorities had found the child and that she was “with her dad.” Denes said she immediately understood the meaning behind those words.
Officials said the investigation remains active as authorities continue searching for the weapon used in the killing and prepare to work closely with prosecutors. Sheriff Brown stated that the goal moving forward is to pursue justice with care, integrity, and compassion, adding that Melodee deserved far more than the fate she suffered.
As the case progresses through the legal system, Ashlee Buzzard has not been found guilty in a court of law. Authorities stressed that the charges represent allegations based on evidence gathered so far. For many following the case, however, the details revealed by investigators have left a lasting sense of grief and disbelief over the loss of a child whose life ended far too soon.
