The announcement came from Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, who indicated that both sides had agreed to the meeting and were now entering the final stages of preparation.
It would be the first summit between the two countries’ leaders since 2021, marking a potential turning point in their diplomatic engagement. Relations between the two powers have been in turmoil since Russia launched its military offensive in Ukraine in February 2022. However, this upcoming meeting could signal a shift in tone and possibly lead to diplomatic progress.

Meanwhile, the national currency also saw gains, with the rouble climbing to a two-week high against both the U.S. dollar and the Chinese yuan.
Investors appear to be hopeful that a thaw in geopolitical tensions could ease sanctions and open up trade avenues, particularly as the economic strain from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and global sanctions continues to weigh on the Russian economy.
The potential meeting has drawn even more attention due to the presence of Trump’s personal envoy, Steve Witkoff, who recently met with President Putin in Moscow.
